Overview

Cardiovascular disorders are diseases of the heart and blood vessels, and peripheral vascular disease is the subset of these conditions that affects the blood vessels outside the heart and brain, most often the arteries supplying the legs. In peripheral arterial disease, fatty deposits and atherosclerosis narrow or block these vessels, reducing blood flow to the limbs and causing symptoms such as leg pain on walking, poor wound healing, and, in severe cases, tissue damage. These disorders share many risk factors with broader cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, abnormal cholesterol, and aging, and the presence of peripheral vascular disease often signals widespread arterial disease and an elevated risk of heart attack and stroke. Hypertension is a particularly important contributor, as sustained high pressure damages arterial walls and accelerates atherosclerosis throughout the circulation. Management combines control of risk factors, lifestyle change, and medication, with procedures used in advanced disease. Hypertension and Cardiology publishes peer-reviewed work relevant to these themes, including studies on microRNAs as tools in hypertension, the efficacy and safety of combination therapy in hypertensive patients, and microRNA-based strategies in ischaemic heart disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cardiovascular disorders and peripheral vascular disease.
