Overview
Cardiovascular disorders are diseases of the heart and blood vessels, encompassing hypertension, coronary and ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, valvular and congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular disease. They share interrelated pathophysiological mechanisms including atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction, myocardial injury and remodelling, pressure and volume overload, oxidative stress, and neurohormonal activation, and collectively represent a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Within Hypertension and Cardiology, cardiovascular disorders are studied across their pathogenesis, functional assessment, and therapeutic modulation, including evaluation of cardiac performance and contractile function in experimental models, the cardioprotective and renoprotective effects of test interventions in induced cardiovascular disease, and antioxidative mechanisms relevant to cardiac and vascular injury. In vitro approaches using cardiomyocyte cell lines, such as H9c2, enable multiparametric analysis of cardiac function and toxicity, while broader research connects cardiovascular disorders to metabolic and lifestyle factors, including diet, body composition, and physical activity, and to the mind-body interactions implicated in physical illness. These lines of inquiry span mechanistic, preclinical, and clinical dimensions of cardiovascular health. This topic assembles peer-reviewed research relevant to the mechanisms, experimental modelling, functional assessment, and management of cardiovascular disorders, reflecting the integrated study of heart and vascular disease within cardiology.
