Overview

Cardiovascular diseases in women encompass the spectrum of heart and vascular disorders as they present, progress, and are managed in female patients, in whom sex-specific factors substantially shape risk and outcomes. Hormonal changes across the reproductive lifespan, pregnancy-related conditions, and menopause influence the development of hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and arrhythmia, while differences in symptom presentation can affect recognition and treatment. Reproductive history, including age at menarche and pregnancy complications, is increasingly recognized as relevant to long-term cardiovascular risk. Research in this area addresses cardiovascular risk factors, sex differences, and disease mechanisms relevant to women's heart health. Studies examine the relationship between reproductive milestones such as age at menarche and subclinical vascular change measured by carotid intima-media thickness, sex differences in dietary adherence and atrial fibrillation risk, and valvular heart disease in the context of pregnancy and delivery. Additional work spans hypertension prevalence and management, cardiorenal signaling in heart failure, candidate genes and microRNAs in cardiovascular disease, and depressive symptoms as mediators of cardiovascular risk in vulnerable patients. This peer-reviewed literature supports clinicians and investigators concerned with sex-aware prevention, diagnosis, and management of cardiovascular disease in women.
