Overview
The aortic valve is one of the four valves of the heart, situated between the left ventricle and the aorta. It consists of cusps that open to let oxygenated blood flow out of the heart into the aorta and close to prevent backflow, opening and closing with each heartbeat to maintain one-way circulation. Disorders of the aortic valve, such as narrowing or leakage, can strain the heart and impair blood flow, making the valve an important focus in cardiology and cardiac surgery. Research in the Journal of Heart and Cardiology and affiliated journals addresses valvular heart disease and related cardiac conditions. Studies describe the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of rheumatic heart disease, which can damage heart valves, and examine valvular heart disease in the setting of pregnancy. Additional work investigates valve pathology at the tissue level and reports on complex cardiac surgery, reflecting the surgical management of structural heart conditions. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access articles gather evidence relevant to heart valves and valvular disease, providing context for understanding the function and disorders of the aortic valve within cardiovascular care.
