Overview

Cognition refers to the suite of mental processes by which the brain acquires, represents, transforms, stores, and acts upon information. It encompasses perception, attention, working and long-term memory, language, reasoning, problem-solving, executive control, and decision-making, all supported by distributed neural systems and modulated by physiological and emotional states. Cognitive psychology and neuroscience study how these operations develop, how they can be measured, and how they degrade in aging or disease. Research in this area examines the trainability of cognition, for example through combined cognitive and aerobic exercise aimed at improving working memory and executive function in older adults, and the protective and risk factors that shape cognitive development in children, including those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A recurring theme is the close coupling between cognition and biology: studies link mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease to structural changes such as medial temporal lobe atrophy and to neuroendocrine markers, while others explore how mood, depression, and anxiety interact with cognitive performance. Allied work considers how abstract concepts are mentally represented and how cognitive resources support adaptation and well-being across the lifespan. Together these strands treat cognition as both a measurable capacity and a target for clinical and behavioral intervention.
