Overview

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental-health conditions characterised by excessive, persistent fear and worry that are disproportionate to actual threat and impair daily functioning. The category includes generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias and related conditions, and is marked by both psychological symptoms of apprehension and physiological arousal mediated by stress-response systems. Anxiety disorders affect cognition, emotional wellbeing and social interaction, frequently co-occur with depression and other disorders, and are studied through clinical psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience, with attention to mechanism, assessment and treatment. Research in this area includes the role of cholecystokinin in fear and anxiety; postpartum mood and anxiety disorders and the experiences of clinicians and parents; the effectiveness of complementary approaches such as Reiki and essential-oil interventions for anxiety; the mind-body relationship in pain; the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; gender disparities and late diagnosis in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; the possibility that early painful experience in the neonatal period triggers persistent anxiety-like behaviour; cognitive-analytic therapy in patients with breast cancer and post-traumatic stress; biofeedback intervention on heart-rate variability; and the psycho-oncological care of immigrant women with breast cancer. Across these contributions the field examines the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms of anxiety, its comorbidity and life-course expression, and a range of pharmacological, psychotherapeutic and complementary interventions used to assess and treat anxiety disorders.
