Overview
Rural health is the field concerned with the health status, health needs, and health-care delivery of populations living in rural and remote areas. It addresses the distinctive challenges of these settings, including geographic isolation, limited transport, workforce shortages, restricted access to facilities and specialist services, and a higher burden of certain chronic and infectious diseases. Rural health research investigates the resulting disparities in access and outcomes and evaluates strategies such as community-based programmes, task-shifting to community health workers, mobile and outreach services, and adapted logistics to extend care equitably to underserved populations. Research in this area examines inequities in the uptake of hospital delivery and the role of social determinants, nutritional status and assessment among rural women and children, field implementation of cold-chain systems for nutritional surveys, factors associated with caesarean section in district hospitals, and access to and barriers to ophthalmic services in rural communities. Further work addresses micronutrient deficiencies such as vitamin A among rural preschool children, dietary patterns including salt overconsumption, and qualitative methodology in health-care research. Studies span sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and rural China, using surveys, field studies, and qualitative inquiry. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on rural health disparities and service delivery.
