Overview
A risk factor is a characteristic, exposure, or behaviour that increases the probability of developing a disease or adverse health outcome. Risk factors may be non-modifiable, such as age, sex, and genetic predisposition, or modifiable, such as diet, physical inactivity, obesity, tobacco use, and environmental or occupational exposures. Epidemiological research distinguishes association from causation and quantifies risk through measures such as prevalence, relative risk, and odds ratios, while recognising that many chronic conditions arise from the interaction of genetic susceptibility, lifestyle, and social and environmental determinants. Identifying and stratifying risk factors underpins screening, prevention, and targeted intervention. Research in this area examines cardiovascular and cardio-metabolic risk factors across populations including people living with HIV, elderly hypertensive patients, and migrant communities; central obesity and anthropometric indicators in adolescents; nutrition- and obesity-related risk in asthma; breast cancer risk factors; determinants of asthma; and parasitic infection among schoolchildren. Studies frequently use cross-sectional and case-control designs and explore mediating pathways such as depressive symptoms in chronic disease. By linking exposures to measurable outcomes, this work supports preventive strategies and culturally tailored interventions. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research identifying and characterising health risk factors across diverse populations.
