Overview

Chronic disease is a broad category of medical conditions that persist over a prolonged period, typically defined as lasting a year or more, and that generally require ongoing management rather than offering a definitive cure. Examples include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, chronic respiratory and liver disease, and arthritis. These conditions commonly arise from interacting genetic, behavioural, environmental, and metabolic factors, develop and progress gradually, and account for a large share of disability, reduced quality of life, and premature mortality worldwide. Their long-term nature places sustained demands on patients and health systems, making prevention, early detection, and adherence to treatment central concerns. Research in this area examines the determinants and trajectories of conditions such as asthma, chronic kidney and liver disease, and chronic myeloid leukaemia, the molecular and genetic factors underlying chronic pathology, the role of inflammation and stress in disease persistence, drivers and barriers to medication adherence, and the management of chronic pain. Further strands address comorbidity, diagnostic testing, and the interplay of nutrition and metabolic risk. These studies connect biological mechanisms to clinical management and outcomes. Chronic disease matters because its rising global burden demands effective strategies for prevention, treatment, and long-term care. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the causes, course, and management of chronic conditions and their impact on health.
