Overview

Adolescent health concerns the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of young people during the transition from childhood to adulthood, a period commonly defined as spanning roughly ages 10 to 24. Adolescence is marked by rapid biological maturation, cognitive and psychosocial change, and the establishment of behaviours and risk exposures that influence health across the life course. Key domains include nutrition and growth, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and the prevention of risk behaviours, all shaped by family, school, and community contexts. Research in this area examines nutritional status and nutrition knowledge among adolescents, the management of childhood and adolescent obesity, sexual and reproductive health education and parent-adolescent communication, identity and the transition to parenthood among adolescent mothers, and the determinants of HIV-related knowledge and preventive behaviour. Further strands address hypertension in adolescents and access to reproductive-health services. These studies highlight how the circumstances and choices of adolescence affect immediate and future health. Adolescent health matters because patterns established in this developmental window have lasting consequences, and because targeted education, services, and support can reduce risk and promote well-being. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the nutritional, reproductive, mental, and behavioural health of adolescents and the interventions that support them.
