Overview

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a heterogeneous group of aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas that arise from mature, post-thymic (peripheral) T-lymphocytes or natural killer cells, accounting for a minority of lymphoid malignancies and generally carrying a less favourable prognosis than many B-cell lymphomas. The category encompasses numerous distinct entities, including peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, anaplastic large cell lymphoma and the lymphoepithelioid (Lennert) variant, each with characteristic clinical, histological and immunophenotypic features. Diagnosis relies on tissue biopsy with immunohistochemistry and molecular studies, and treatment commonly involves combination chemotherapy, sometimes followed by stem-cell transplantation. Because these lymphomas are uncommon and morphologically diverse, case reports and small series remain important to characterising their presentation and management. Research published in this journal reflects this through reports and studies of lymphoid neoplasms, including a case of Lennert lymphoma (lymphoepithelioid lymphoma) with extensive necrosis, breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and the subtypes and treatment outcomes of non-Hodgkin lymphomas in resource-poor settings. Additional work addresses lymphoma diagnostics, central nervous system involvement, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder and biomarkers such as lactate dehydrogenase in lymphoma. Together these studies illustrate ongoing interest in the classification, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of T-cell and related lymphoid malignancies.
