Overview
Leukemia is a malignant disorder of hematopoietic cells in which clonal proliferation of abnormal white blood cells displaces normal marrow function and compromises production of red cells, platelets, and competent leukocytes. It is broadly classified by cell lineage into myeloid and lymphoid disease and by tempo into acute forms, marked by accumulation of immature blasts and rapid progression, and chronic forms, characterized by more mature cells and an indolent course. Diagnosis and subclassification rely on morphology, immunophenotyping, cytogenetics, and molecular analysis of recurrent genetic lesions. Research relevant to this journal addresses the genetic, cytogenetic, and clinical dimensions of leukemia across its subtypes. Studies include neuropilin-1/CD304 expression in leukemogenesis, a novel chromosomal translocation in pediatric precursor-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia, evolution of Janus kinase 2-negative myelofibrosis into Philadelphia-positive chronic myeloid leukemia, detection of the Philadelphia chromosome in a patient with monoclonal gammopathy, medication-adherence barriers in chronic myeloid leukemia, and infectious complications such as invasive aspergillosis in hematology wards. Related work examines cholesterol-conjugated siRNA in hematopoietic and lymphoid cells, immune thrombocytopenia after stem-cell transplantation, and broader tumor-formation genetics. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical, cytogenetic, and molecular research on leukemia and related hematological malignancies.
