Overview

Cutaneous melanoma is a malignant tumor that arises from melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells of the skin. Although it accounts for a minority of skin cancers, it is the most dangerous because of its strong tendency to invade deeply and to spread, or metastasize, to lymph nodes and distant organs. Melanoma develops when melanocytes acquire genetic changes that allow them to grow uncontrollably, and a major risk factor is exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial sources, although it can also arise on skin not regularly exposed to the sun. Warning signs include a new or changing mole with irregular borders, uneven color, growth, or other changes. Early detection is critical, because melanoma caught while still confined to the skin is often curable by surgery, whereas advanced disease requires systemic treatments such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy, which have transformed outcomes in recent years. Hematology and Oncology Research publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to melanoma and other cancers, including reports of metastatic malignant melanoma of the gastrointestinal tract, melanoma carrying a Smoothened (SMO) mutation, the dynamics of circulating microRNA in plasma of melanoma patients in relation to progression and survival, and primary melanoma of the parotid gland. This page gathers open-access research relevant to cutaneous melanoma and the biology, diagnosis, and treatment of melanoma.
