Overview

Cultured tumor cells are cancer cells grown and maintained outside the body under controlled laboratory conditions, typically isolated from tumor tissue and propagated in vitro. They provide a reproducible system for studying how malignant cells grow, divide, respond to drugs and acquire new properties, and they underpin much of preclinical cancer research, including drug screening and investigations of tumor biology. Because behaviour in culture can differ from that in living tissue, researchers also study how culture conditions and experimental systems shape the characteristics that tumor cells display. Reflecting the hematology and oncology focus of this journal, related research has examined how malignant cells behave across laboratory models. A study on the evolution of solid human tumor cell properties in various experimental systems in vitro investigates how cultured cancer cells change in different experimental settings, directly addressing the use and interpretation of tumor cell cultures. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cultured tumor cells and their role as experimental models in cancer biology and oncology research.
