Overview
Coagulation factors are proteins, mostly produced by the liver, that act in a regulated cascade to form blood clots and stop bleeding after injury. Each factor activates the next in sequence, ultimately converting fibrinogen to fibrin to stabilize a clot, and a balance of activating and inhibitory factors keeps clotting confined to sites of injury. Deficiencies or dysfunction of specific factors cause bleeding disorders such as the hemophilias, while excessive or unregulated activity contributes to thrombosis, making these proteins central to both hematology and oncology. In Hematology and Oncology Research, work directly relevant to coagulation factors includes a study of inherited bleeding disorders examining genetic mutations in blood coagulation factors and regulatory proteins, an analysis of hypercoagulability in patients with acute leukaemia, a case report and literature review of acquired haemophilia, and a report of Rosenthal's disease (factor XI deficiency) presenting as chronic epistaxis. Related work on haematological disturbances in dengue haemorrhagic fever addresses coagulation abnormalities in the setting of infection. Together these studies span inherited and acquired disorders of clotting factors and their links to malignancy. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to coagulation factors and disorders of hemostasis.
