Overview
Chemotherapy is the use of cytotoxic drugs to kill cancer cells or halt their proliferation, and it remains a cornerstone of treatment across hematology and oncology. These agents act preferentially on rapidly dividing cells, a hallmark of malignancy, and may be given orally or by intravenous infusion, alone or in combination regimens and alongside radiotherapy, surgery, or stem-cell transplantation. Because chemotherapy also affects healthy fast-dividing tissues, it carries characteristic toxicities, including suppression of blood-cell production, that must be managed during care. Peer-reviewed research indexed here illustrates the breadth of this field: case-based work has described progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy arising during R-CHOP chemotherapy in lymphoma, and studies have evaluated plerixafor for rescue mobilization of autologous peripheral blood stem cells, a step often required before high-dose chemotherapy. Other indexed work has investigated lineage-specific disruption of hematopoiesis by oxaliplatin, examining mechanisms of erythropoietin resistance and immune suppression that contribute to chemotherapy-related cytopenias. Together these reflect both the therapeutic role and the hematologic consequences of cytotoxic treatment. This page collects open-access, peer-reviewed research relevant to chemotherapy in Hematology and Oncology Research.
