Overview

Case-control studies are a type of observational epidemiological design used to investigate factors associated with a disease or outcome. Investigators identify a group of individuals who already have the condition of interest (cases) and a comparable group who do not (controls), then look backward to compare prior exposures or characteristics between the two groups, typically expressing associations as odds ratios. The design is especially efficient for studying rare diseases and conditions with long latency, and it is widely used in Hematology and Oncology Research to explore candidate risk factors for cancers and blood disorders. Its strengths are speed and economy, while its limitations include susceptibility to selection and recall bias and the need for careful selection of controls; because exposures are assessed after disease onset, case-control studies establish association rather than proof of causation. Research published across the publisher's portfolio applies this design, including a case-control study examining serum vitamin D levels in patients with oral lichen planus, illustrating how cases and controls are compared to evaluate a potential associated factor. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to case-control studies and their use in identifying disease risk factors.
