Overview

Blood transfusion is the medical procedure of transferring blood or specific blood components, such as red blood cells, platelets, or plasma, from a donor into a patient's bloodstream. It is used to replace blood lost through surgery, trauma, or childbirth, and to treat conditions in which the body cannot produce enough healthy blood cells, including anemias, certain cancers, and bleeding or clotting disorders. Safe transfusion depends on careful donor screening, blood typing and cross-matching to ensure compatibility, and testing for transfusion-transmissible infections, all of which are central concerns in hematology and the supportive care of patients with blood and oncologic disorders. Within the scope of this journal's focus on Hematology and Oncology Research, blood transfusion encompasses both clinical practice and the management of blood supplies. Research published in the journal addresses these dimensions, including efforts to bridge gaps in blood transfusion services through collaborative healthcare systems in Cameroon, the importance of confirmation testing in diagnosing hepatitis C among blood donors, evaluation of blood ordering practices for packed red blood cells in a tertiary care hospital, and study of glucose and apoptosis levels in stored platelets. Together these reflect attention to transfusion safety, supply, and component quality. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to blood transfusion.
