Overview
Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries, expressed as systolic pressure during cardiac ejection over diastolic pressure during ventricular relaxation. It is determined by cardiac output and total peripheral vascular resistance, and is modulated by autonomic tone, the renin-angiotensin system, vascular compliance, and fluid and electrolyte balance. Sustained elevation, or hypertension, is a major modifiable risk factor for stroke, heart failure, renal disease, and other cardiovascular outcomes, while abnormal regulation also manifests as orthostatic and exertional responses. Accurate measurement is central to both clinical care and research: standardized office measurement, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, and indices such as systolic and diastolic load characterize the diurnal pressure profile, and methodological standards are emphasized in studies where blood pressure is a primary endpoint. Determinants and correlates studied across populations include obesity, metabolic syndrome, genetic polymorphisms, diabetes, physical activity, and dietary intervention, alongside adolescent and pregnancy-related hypertension and the rate-pressure product as a marker of cardiac workload. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the measurement, epidemiology, determinants, and management of blood pressure and hypertension, including ambulatory monitoring methodology, cardiovascular risk factors, and lifestyle and pharmacological influences on arterial pressure across diverse patient groups.
