Overview

Blood counts are laboratory measurements of the numbers and characteristics of the cellular components of blood, providing a foundational assessment in haematology and oncology. The complete blood count quantifies the three main cell types: red blood cells, which carry oxygen via haemoglobin; white blood cells, which mediate immune defence; and platelets, which are essential for clotting. It also reports derived values such as haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, indices describing red-cell size and content, and differential counts of white-cell subtypes. These parameters reflect the activity of the bone marrow, where blood cells are produced through haematopoiesis, and deviations can indicate a wide range of conditions, including anaemias such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, infections, inflammation, bleeding and clotting disorders, and haematological malignancies such as leukaemia. In oncology, blood counts are central to detecting marrow involvement, monitoring disease, and tracking the effects of treatments such as chemotherapy, which can suppress cell production and alter counts. Because blood cell production can be disrupted by disease or therapy, serial counts help guide diagnosis, assess severity, and inform supportive care. Interpreted alongside clinical findings and further tests, blood counts are an essential, widely used tool for evaluating health, characterising blood and bone-marrow disorders, and managing patients across haematology and oncology.
