Overview
Blood is the circulating connective tissue that transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and metabolic waste, mediates immune defense and hemostasis, and maintains thermal and chemical homeostasis. It comprises a liquid plasma phase suspending three cellular lineages: erythrocytes, which carry oxygen via hemoglobin; leukocytes, which provide cellular and humoral immunity; and platelets, which initiate clotting. All arise from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow, and their quantitative and qualitative assessment underpins the diagnosis of hematological and systemic disease. In hematology and oncology, the study of blood encompasses malignancies such as leukemias and lymphomas, inherited and acquired bleeding and coagulation disorders, anemias, and the mobilization and transplantation of peripheral blood stem cells. Transfusion medicine is integral to this field, addressing blood donation, compatibility, blood-ordering practice, transfusion-transmitted infections, and the safe management of blood supply, particularly in resource-limited settings. Blood also serves as the principal medium for laboratory measurement of physiological parameters, including glucose and lipid concentrations, and for assessment of hemodynamic variables such as blood pressure in clinical research. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning hematological disease, transfusion and blood-bank practice, coagulation and bleeding disorders, and the use of blood-based measurement in the diagnosis and management of disease.
