Overview

Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or the haemoglobin concentration falls below normal, reducing the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity and producing symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pallor, and breathlessness. It is a manifestation of diverse underlying processes rather than a single disease, and is classified by red-cell size and mechanism, including iron, vitamin B12, and folate deficiency anaemias, anaemia of chronic disease and chronic kidney disease, haemolytic anaemias, and bone-marrow failure states such as Diamond-Blackfan anaemia. In haematology and oncology, anaemia is both a common presenting feature of haematological and malignant disease and a frequent complication of cancer and its treatment, since chemotherapy and marrow infiltration can suppress erythropoiesis and induce erythropoietin resistance. Research in this area examines the molecular and genetic basis of specific anaemias, including hepcidin regulation and ribosomal-protein mutations, laboratory diagnosis and treatment approaches, and the impact of nutritional deficiency, infection, and chronic disease on haematological indices across populations. Anaemia in pregnancy and in childhood micronutrient deficiency is also addressed. Diagnosis, mechanism, and management are central concerns. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on anaemia, its diagnosis and pathophysiology, and its management in haematological, oncological, and nutritional contexts.
