Overview

Obesity is a chronic condition characterised by excessive accumulation of body fat to a degree that impairs health. It arises from a sustained positive energy balance, in which energy intake exceeds expenditure, shaped by the interaction of dietary patterns, physical activity, genetic and hormonal influences, behaviour, and the social and cultural environment. Adipose tissue is not merely a store of energy but an active endocrine organ, and its dysfunction in obesity contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance, and altered hormonal signalling, including that of thyroid hormones and catecholamines. Obesity substantially raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, certain cancers, and reproductive and other complications, and it is commonly assessed using anthropometric measures of overall and central adiposity. Its prevalence has risen across many populations and age groups, including children, and its management must often be understood within cultural and behavioural contexts. Approaches to prevention and treatment emphasise dietary modification, physical activity, and behaviour change, with pharmacological, nutritional, and other interventions investigated in experimental and clinical studies. Research relevant to this topic examines the physiology of adipose tissue, the determinants and prevalence of overweight and obesity, the effects of dietary and plant-derived interventions in experimental models, and the metabolic and hormonal mechanisms that link excess adiposity to disease.
