Overview
Poultry refers to domesticated birds raised for meat, eggs, and other products, most prominently chickens, together with turkeys, ducks, and related species. As one of the most efficient and widely practised forms of animal agriculture, poultry production is a major source of dietary protein and a significant contributor to rural and national economies. Its productivity depends on the close management of nutrition, growth, and feed efficiency, where strategies such as enzyme supplementation of feed are used to improve performance and economic viability, alongside genetics, housing, and husbandry. Flock health is central to the enterprise, since intensive rearing predisposes birds to infectious and parasitic disease; pathogens of concern include Mycoplasma gallisepticum and synoviae, avian pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli, and protozoan agents such as Eimeria that cause coccidiosis, prompting research into diagnosis, control, and therapeutic agents. Poultry also intersects with food safety and public health, as contamination of meat and eggs by bacteria and the emergence of resistant organisms raise hygiene and surveillance concerns along the production chain. Work in this area accordingly spans nutrition and feed technology, molecular detection and characterisation of pathogens, microbiological quality of poultry products, and the management practices that sustain healthy, productive flocks.
