Overview
Genetic engineering is the deliberate modification of an organism's genome using molecular techniques to introduce, delete, or alter specific DNA sequences, thereby conferring new or changed traits. It encompasses recombinant DNA technology, gene transfer and transformation, and targeted genome editing, enabling the transfer of genes within or across species and the precise rewriting of genetic information. In agriculture it is used to develop crops and to advance plant genetics and breeding, supporting improvements in yield, quality, disease resistance, and tolerance of environmental stress; characterisation of genes involved in host-pathogen interactions, such as those mediating susceptibility to powdery mildew, illustrates the underlying molecular work. In medicine and biotechnology the same principles underpin the production of therapeutic proteins, gene and cell therapies, vaccines, and engineered organisms used in research and manufacturing, and they inform proteomic and genomic strategies for diagnostics and personalised treatment. The discipline draws heavily on bioinformatics and on supporting tools across genomics and proteomics to design constructs and interpret outcomes. While powerful, genetic engineering raises biosafety, regulatory, and ethical considerations that shape its application. Research relevant to this topic spans precision plant breeding, the functional analysis and expression of genes, microbial and yeast-based bioprocessing, and the broader translation of genetic modification into agricultural, industrial, and biomedical use.
