Overview

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and interaction together with restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. It is described as a spectrum because its features, severity, and accompanying strengths and challenges vary widely between individuals. Autism typically becomes apparent in early childhood and is usually a lifelong condition; it is frequently accompanied by co-occurring issues such as feeding difficulties, sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems, and other developmental or medical concerns. Within Family Medicine and primary care, recognition, support, and coordination of care for autistic individuals and their families are important, since first concerns are often raised in these settings. Research published in this journal addresses several clinically relevant aspects of autism. Contributions examine feeding problems in children with autism spectrum disorders, dietary approaches such as gluten- and casein-free or elemental diets, and sleep patterns, including the effects of weekends and clock changes. Other work considers neurofeedback and neuroscience-based perspectives on ASD physiopathology, the role of the gut microbiota and diet in health, and case reports of associated conditions. Recurring themes include early identification, the management of co-occurring physical symptoms, dietary and behavioral interventions, and the broader neurobiology of the condition, situating autism care within a comprehensive, family-centered model of health.
