Overview

Toxic agents are chemical, physical, or biological substances capable of causing harm to living organisms, including injury, illness, or death, when an organism is exposed to a sufficient dose. They encompass a wide range of materials, such as industrial chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, drugs, natural toxins, and certain biological products, and exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion, skin contact, or injection. The effects of a toxic agent depend on factors including its inherent properties, the dose, the route and duration of exposure, and the susceptibility of the exposed organism, in keeping with the central toxicological principle that the dose determines the poison. Toxic agents are studied in both Experimental and Clinical Toxicology to understand their mechanisms of harm, to assess risk, and to guide prevention, regulation, diagnosis, and treatment of poisoning. Their study has broad implications for occupational and environmental health, public safety, and medicine. This page draws on the journal's peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to toxic exposures, including a study of the effects of hexavalent chromium, a recognized toxic metal, on the white blood cells of fish, and a case report of hearing loss induced by pesticide exposure in a rural worker. Together these works illustrate how toxic agents are investigated and their effects on living systems characterized.
