Overview
The toxic actions of aluminum refer to the harmful effects that aluminum can have on the body and on living systems under certain conditions of exposure. Aluminum is one of the most abundant elements in the earth's crust and is widely present in the environment, food, water, and many consumer and industrial products. In its common forms it is generally of low toxicity, and the body absorbs and retains only a small fraction of typical dietary aluminum. However, higher or prolonged exposure, certain aluminum compounds, or impaired ability to clear aluminum can lead to accumulation and toxic effects. Reported concerns associated with aluminum exposure include effects on the nervous system and bone, and aluminum accumulation has been studied particularly in individuals with reduced kidney function who cannot efficiently excrete it.
