Overview

Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of populations through organized, evidence-based prevention rather than individual clinical treatment. It rests on core functions including surveillance of disease and risk factors, epidemiological assessment, policy development, health promotion, and assurance of access to services. Foundational disciplines span epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, health-systems management, and the social and behavioral determinants of health. Interventions operate across primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention, from vector control and immunization to screening programs, health education, and regulation of tobacco and other exposures. Research in this area characterizes the burden and distribution of communicable and non-communicable disease, evaluates community-based programs, and analyzes the structural conditions that shape health equity. Recurring themes include the control of vector-borne and zoonotic infections, tobacco control and e-cigarette risks, cardiovascular and HIV care delivery, climate change impacts on population health, foodborne and milk-borne contaminants, data quality in health facilities, and community health needs assessment, frequently using cross-sectional surveys, cluster-randomized designs, and program evaluation across diverse low-, middle-, and high-income settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research addressing these dimensions of disease prevention, health-services organization, and the protection of population well-being.
