Overview

Alternative medicine refers to therapeutic practices and products used in place of, or alongside, conventional biomedicine, including herbal and botanical medicine, traditional medical systems, acupuncture, dietary and energy-based therapies, and homeopathy; when used together with standard care the broader term is complementary and alternative medicine. The field is studied for its prevalence, putative mechanisms, and—critically—the strength of evidence supporting efficacy and safety, with botanical and ethnomedical approaches generally more amenable to pharmacological evaluation than practices lacking a defined physical mechanism. The studies collected here reflect this range: complementary and alternative treatments examined for cancer prevention and management, surveys of medicinal plants and their traditional uses, and a case report on a manual technique applied in hyperuricemia. A substantial cluster investigates purported energy- and consciousness-based healing interventions evaluated in cell-line and animal models—covering ulcerative colitis, sleep biomarkers, vital-organ health markers, bone-health parameters, and aging-related dysfunction—alongside dermatological observations such as contact hypersensitivity to lavender oil. Methods span in vitro cell-based assays, animal models, surveys, and case reports, with evidence quality varying widely across modalities. This topic assembles peer-reviewed research on complementary and alternative therapies, their traditional and experimental study, and the ongoing evaluation of their biological plausibility and clinical evidence.
