Overview

Plant stem cells are undifferentiated cells found in specialised regions of plants called meristems, located primarily at the growing tips of shoots and roots and within the vascular tissue. Like stem cells in animals, they retain the capacity to divide repeatedly and to give rise to the various specialised cell types that make up plant tissues and organs, enabling continuous growth, the formation of new leaves, stems, roots, and flowers, and the regeneration of damaged tissue throughout a plant's life. Their activity is tightly regulated by hormonal signals and gene networks that balance self-renewal against differentiation. Plant stem cells are of considerable interest in research and biotechnology: they underpin techniques such as tissue culture and micropropagation, in which whole plants are regenerated from small amounts of tissue, and they have applications in agriculture, horticulture, and the production of plant-derived compounds, including ingredients used in cosmetics. Understanding how these cells maintain their potential and respond to their environment also informs efforts to improve crops and conserve plant species. As a subject of regenerative and developmental plant biology, plant stem cells fall within the broad scope of stem cell research. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to stem cells and regenerative biology.
