Overview
Cell therapy for cancer is a treatment strategy that uses living cells, either harvested from the patient or from a donor and often modified ex vivo, to target and eliminate malignant cells or to support tissue and immune recovery during oncologic care. The approach sits within the broader field of regenerative medicine and stem cell therapeutics, which encompasses the isolation, expansion, and therapeutic deployment of stem and progenitor populations, including mesenchymal stem cells derived from sources such as adipose tissue. Mechanistic research underpinning these therapies examines the molecular controls on stemness and proliferation, including regulation of pluripotency factors such as OCT4 through microRNA-mediated targeting of gene promoters, and the role of circadian oscillators in cancer stem cell behavior, which together inform how malignant and regenerative cell states are sustained or disrupted. Applications extend across hematologic and solid tumors and intersect with efforts to refine prevention, diagnosis, imaging, screening, and management in cancers such as lung cancer, while cell-based interventions have also been explored for non-oncologic indications. By combining knowledge of cell biology, immunology, and gene regulation, cell therapy aims to convert understanding of cellular mechanisms into targeted, potentially durable cancer treatments.
