Overview

Follicle-stimulating hormone is a glycoprotein gonadotropin secreted by the gonadotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland and composed of a shared alpha subunit and a hormone-specific beta subunit. Its release is driven by pulsatile hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone and is modulated by feedback from gonadal steroids and the peptides inhibin and activin. In females it drives recruitment and maturation of ovarian follicles, supports granulosa-cell proliferation, and promotes estrogen production through stimulation of aromatase, acting in concert with luteinizing hormone across the menstrual cycle. In males it acts on Sertoli cells to sustain spermatogenesis. As a central component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, follicle-stimulating hormone is a key determinant of reproductive function and fertility, and its measurement and exogenous administration underpin ovarian stimulation protocols in assisted reproduction, including controlled and milder regimens used for oocyte retrieval and in vitro fertilization. Disruption of this axis by hormonal contraceptives, pituitary lesions, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or gonadotoxic exposures alters follicle-stimulating hormone signaling and gonadal output. Research relevant to this hormone spans anterior-pituitary histology, oocyte maturation, gonadal responses to plant and chemical agents in animal models, ovarian stimulation outcomes, and the assessment of testicular function in male infertility.
