Overview

Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder in which there is elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which is caused by a combination of resistance to insulin and inadequate insulin production. It is the most common type of diabetes, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide, and is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, and lower limb amputations. Treatment typically involves lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, and may also involve medication such as insulin. Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system and its function in maintaining the body’s normal balance. Endocrinologists are specialists who diagnose, manage and treat a wide range of diabetes and endocrine disorders, including Type 2 Diabetes. Through careful management and education, endocrinologists can help patients maintain their health and prevent the associated long-term complications.
