Overview

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are living organisms whose genetic material has been deliberately altered using recombinant DNA technology or precision genome-editing techniques to introduce, remove, or modify specific traits in ways that do not occur through conventional breeding. The genus of methods spans the insertion of transgenes from other species, the editing of native sequences, and the silencing of endogenous genes, achieved through tools such as transformation vectors, gene guns, and site-directed nucleases. In agriculture, genetic modification is used to confer herbicide tolerance, insect and disease resistance, improved yield, stress tolerance, and enhanced nutritional content, while in medicine and industry it enables the production of pharmaceuticals, enzymes, and other bioproducts in engineered cells and microorganisms. The development of modified crops intersects with precision plant genetics and breeding, where molecular markers and genomic selection accelerate trait improvement. Because the cultivation and trade of GMOs raise regulatory, labelling, and biosafety considerations, reliable detection and identification are essential; functional nucleic acid techniques and molecular assays are used to confirm the presence of introduced sequences, and analytical methods such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry support associated food-safety assessment. Research in this area addresses the technologies enabling genetic modification, the molecular detection of modified material, and the genomic principles underlying trait improvement, informing both the application and the oversight of genetically modified organisms.
