Overview
A gene is the fundamental physical and functional unit of heredity, a defined segment of DNA (or RNA in some viruses) that carries the information needed to synthesize a functional product, typically a protein or a non-coding RNA. Genes encompass coding exons, regulatory promoters and enhancers, and, in eukaryotes, intervening introns; their sequences determine phenotype, while allelic variants and polymorphisms underlie heritable differences in traits and disease susceptibility. Gene-level analysis examines sequence variation, expression, mutation, and clinical association across organisms. Research in this area characterizes single-nucleotide and structural polymorphisms and their links to disease, including catalase exon variants, hepcidin (HAMP) promoter polymorphisms in anemia of chronic kidney disease, PPARα and tissue-factor variants in coronary heart disease, and vitamin D receptor BsmI and ApaI genotypes in dyslipidemia, alongside ACE insertion/deletion associations with type 2 diabetes. Further work addresses molecular evolutionary features of viral coding genes such as the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein, gene silencing through siRNA delivery, chromosomal clustering of human-mouse orthologs, gene-expression responses to viral proteins, and template-independent synthesis of nucleic acid libraries. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies on gene structure, polymorphism, expression, and function, emphasizing molecular genetic approaches to human disease and comparative biology.
