Overview

Microbiology is the scientific study of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and other microscopic life, addressing their structure, metabolism, genetics, ecology, and interactions with hosts and environments. In clinical and applied contexts it underpins the diagnosis, surveillance, and control of infectious disease. A central concern is the epidemiology of bacterial pathogens, illustrated by investigations into the prevalence of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in hospital populations and the laboratory practices and personal protective measures that protect those handling specimens. Molecular detection methods, such as screening residual antigen-test material for SARS-CoV-2 variants, extend the discipline's diagnostic reach beyond culture. Antimicrobial resistance is a defining challenge, examined through situational analyses of resistant organisms in health districts and through antifungal susceptibility testing of Candida species recovered from patients. Mycology and food microbiology feature in studies of yeast spoilage, antifungal activity of essential oils, and quantitative microbiological risk assessment used to improve food-processing safety. Medical mycology also encompasses invasive fungal infection, including intracranial aspergillosis. Across these areas microbiology links the biology of microorganisms to laboratory identification, resistance monitoring, and the prevention of infection in healthcare, food, and community settings.
