Overview

The role of hormones refers to the functions of hormones, the chemical messengers secreted by endocrine glands that travel through the bloodstream to target tissues and organs, where they regulate a wide range of physiological processes. Hormones coordinate growth and development, metabolism, reproduction, stress responses, fluid and electrolyte balance, mood, and many other functions by binding to specific receptors and triggering changes in cell activity. Through feedback systems, the endocrine system maintains balance within the body, adjusting hormone levels in response to internal and external conditions. In the context of digestion, hormones also help regulate appetite, the secretion of digestive enzymes and acids, and the movement of the gastrointestinal tract, linking endocrine function to digestive physiology. Imbalances in hormone production or action can lead to a variety of disorders, making the study of hormones important across physiology and medicine. Within the scope of this journal, research relevant to hormonal function includes work on the adaptive contribution of thyroid hormones in obesity and on thyroid function abnormalities in patients with chronic kidney disease, illustrating how hormones such as those of the thyroid influence metabolism and respond to disease states. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the role of hormones in physiology.
