Overview

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, principally Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, characterized by inflammation of the digestive lining that produces symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and fatigue. Its precise cause is not fully understood but is thought to involve a dysregulated immune response to gut contents in genetically susceptible individuals, influenced by environmental and microbial factors. IBD follows a course of flares and remissions, can affect different segments of the gut, and carries risks of complications and, over time, an increased likelihood of colorectal cancer, making accurate diagnosis and long-term management important. Within Digestive Disorders And Diagnosis, work on IBD spans imaging, biomarkers, therapeutics, and the psychological dimensions of care. The journal's articles include studies on capsaicin as a potential adjuvant therapy, the psychological burden associated with colonoscopy, and identification of actionable findings on computed tomography in Crohn's disease. Additional work addresses magnetic resonance enterography for Crohn's diagnosis, cellular and molecular biomarkers for anti-inflammatory probiotic activity in fermented foods, predictors of colorectal cancer, and experimental models of ulcerative colitis. Together these reflect research themes in diagnosis, anti-inflammatory and dietary interventions, and the relationship between chronic gut inflammation and cancer risk.
