Overview

Gastrointestinal imaging encompasses the diagnostic techniques used to visualize the structure and function of the digestive tract and associated organs, including the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and adjacent tissues. These methods range from radiographic and contrast studies to cross-sectional modalities such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging, and functional imaging such as positron emission tomography (PET), often combined as PET/CT. Imaging supports the detection, characterization, and staging of inflammatory, structural, and malignant conditions of the gut, and it helps guide management decisions in both acute and chronic settings. Research in this journal demonstrates these applications: a study describing a model for identifying clinically actionable findings on computed tomography in patients with Crohn's disease addresses the use of CT in the emergency-department evaluation of inflammatory bowel disease, while a case report on adenosquamous cell carcinoma of the stomach illustrates the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in diagnosing and characterizing a gastric malignancy. Together these works highlight how imaging informs the diagnosis and assessment of digestive disorders. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to digestive disorders and gastrointestinal imaging.
