Overview
Gastrointestinal disorders are conditions that affect the organs of the digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus, as well as accessory organs involved in digestion. They encompass functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, acid-related diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers, and problems such as constipation, malabsorption, and food intolerance. Symptoms commonly include abdominal pain, bloating, altered bowel habits, heartburn, and nausea, and untreated disease can lead to nutritional deficiencies and other complications. Digestive Disorders And Diagnosis is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal covering the diagnosis, management, and underlying biology of digestive disease and related nutrition. Its published research reflects this scope, including an analysis of quality change in the market for anti-ulcer drugs, which addresses pharmacotherapy for acid-related GI disease, and studies bearing on gastrointestinal and nutritional management, such as the clinical use of a peptide-based formula in children, the use of a partially hydrolyzed whey-based infant formula in infants with perceived intolerance, and reviews of diet-based approaches in autism spectrum disorders and of functional foods. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to gastrointestinal disorders and their diagnosis and dietary management.
