Overview

Gastrointestinal cancer is a collective term for malignant tumours arising in the organs of the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, liver, gallbladder and biliary tract, and pancreas. Each site has distinct epidemiology, risk factors, histology, and clinical behaviour, yet together these cancers represent a major share of the global cancer burden. Risk is shaped by factors such as diet, obesity, tobacco and alcohol, chronic inflammation and infection, and inherited predisposition, and many gastrointestinal cancers progress through recognisable precancerous changes that offer opportunities for screening and early detection. Presentations vary by site and stage and may include altered bowel habit, bleeding, pain, obstruction, jaundice, and weight loss, while diagnosis combines endoscopy, imaging, histopathology, and molecular biomarkers. Management is stage-dependent and multidisciplinary, integrating surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted approaches, with nutritional support an important component in patients affected by cachexia and impaired intake. The articles collected here address pancreatic adenocarcinoma presenting with massive haematemesis, ultrasonographic assessment of locally advanced gastric cancer, predictors of colon cancer in patients investigated for iron deficiency, nutrition and immunonutrition in cancer patients, molecular biomarkers, and oxidative and aging-related cancer biology. Recurring themes include the diverse anatomical subtypes, risk factors and carcinogenesis, diagnostic imaging and biomarkers, and nutritional and supportive care. The topic sits within gastrointestinal oncology and digestive disease.
