Overview

Gastric cancer, or stomach cancer, is a malignancy arising in the gastric mucosa, most commonly adenocarcinoma originating from the glandular epithelium, though adenosquamous and other histological variants occur. Its development is linked to chronic Helicobacter pylori infection, Epstein-Barr virus, chronic gastritis, dietary and environmental exposures, and progression through atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia. Presentation is often late, with dysphagia, abdominal pain, weight loss, and anemia, and accurate staging guides therapy. Diagnostic and assessment approaches include endoscopy with biopsy, cross-sectional and functional imaging, and metabolic imaging such as 18F-FDG PET/CT. Research relevant to this topic encompasses transabdominal ultrasonography for evaluating structural and functional disorders in locally advanced gastric cancer of varied localization, the efficacy of HER2-directed antibody therapy with trastuzumab in HER2-positive advanced disease, PET/CT diagnosis of adenosquamous gastric carcinoma, and the association of Epstein-Barr virus with gastric carcinoma in patient cohorts. Related work addresses prognostic markers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in upper aerodigestive malignancy and broader questions of cancer screening and management. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical, diagnostic, and pathological studies addressing gastric carcinoma, its detection, molecular characterization, and treatment.
