Overview

Chronic diseases are long-lasting conditions, generally non-communicable, that persist over time and require ongoing management, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disease, and obesity. They share common behavioural and metabolic risk factors and account for a large share of morbidity, disability, and healthcare burden worldwide. A central theme in this area is risk factors and prevention, including the lower prevalence of risk factors among vegetarian populations, the role of diet, obesity, and behaviour modification, and the contribution of metabolic and hormonal factors. A second strand concerns management in primary care and across the life course, including care of frail patients in general practice, the mediating role of depressive symptoms in vulnerable diabetic elderly people, and family-based and insurance-related dimensions of long-term care. A third addresses mechanisms and emerging perspectives, such as proposed neural and mind-body contributions to chronic illness, environmental exposure assessed through metabolomics, and the role of epigenetics and nutrition. Methodologically the field combines epidemiological studies, clinical cohorts, and reviews. By identifying modifiable determinants, effective management strategies, and underlying mechanisms, chronic-disease research informs prevention, early intervention, and integrated long-term care aimed at reducing the incidence, complications, and societal impact of conditions that unfold over years and decades.
