Overview
Staphylococcus is a genus of Gram-positive, catalase-positive cocci that characteristically cluster in grape-like arrangements and colonize the skin, mucous membranes, and nares of humans and animals as commensals and opportunistic pathogens. Species such as Staphylococcus aureus cause infections ranging from superficial skin and soft-tissue disease, including pyoderma and abscesses, to invasive conditions like bacteremia, endocarditis, and toxin-mediated syndromes. A defining clinical concern is antimicrobial resistance, exemplified by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and the emergence of strains with reduced susceptibility to last-line agents, which complicates therapy and drives surveillance and stewardship. Identification relies on morphological, biochemical, and molecular methods, while susceptibility testing guides treatment choice. Research relevant to this area examines MRSA colonization, antibiotic susceptibility patterns and colonization risk factors among people living with HIV, in vitro activity of agents against MRSA non-susceptible to daptomycin, linezolid, or vancomycin, vancomycin treatment of multidrug-resistant MRSA-associated canine pyoderma, molecular confirmation of staphylococcal strains, and the antibacterial activity of plant- and metal-based compounds against skin-associated bacteria. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies on staphylococcal infection, antimicrobial resistance, microbial identification, and the prevention and treatment of cutaneous and systemic disease caused by these organisms.
