Overview
Skin lesions are localized areas of skin that differ in appearance, texture, or structure from the surrounding normal integument, arising from infection, inflammation, immune dysregulation, neoplasia, trauma, vascular change, or drug reaction. They are classified by morphology into primary lesions, which develop directly from the disease process (macules, papules, plaques, nodules, vesicles, bullae, pustules, and wheals), and secondary lesions, which evolve from primary ones or from external factors (scales, crusts, erosions, ulcers, and scars). A further clinically critical distinction separates benign lesions from premalignant and malignant ones, since accurate recognition guides biopsy, histopathological diagnosis, and treatment. The differential is broad and includes inflammatory and autoimmune blistering conditions such as bullous pemphigoid, vascular and cold-induced lesions such as pernio, urticarial eruptions, drug-induced cutaneous toxicity, and epithelial malignancies such as actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma, which may be managed with topical, ablative laser, or surgical modalities. Systematic description of distribution, configuration, colour, and surface change underpins dermatological diagnosis and monitoring. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research, case reports, and treatment studies concerning the presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of cutaneous lesions across infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic categories.
