Overview

Melanoma is a malignant tumor that arises from melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells of the skin, and less commonly of the eye, mucous membranes, and other sites. It is the most aggressive common form of skin cancer because of its capacity to invade and metastasize to distant organs, which makes early detection and treatment central to improving outcomes. Risk is associated with ultraviolet exposure and genetic factors, and recognition of new or changing pigmented lesions is an important element of screening. Articles in this journal address both the biology and clinical management of melanoma. Topics include the evaluation of sunscreens and sun protection in relation to melanoma risk, immune checkpoint blockade of the programmed cell death protein-1 pathway, and combinations of radiation therapy or oncolytic viruses with immunotherapy. Other work examines circulating microRNA expression in relation to disease progression, PD-L1 status, and survival, as well as molecular alterations such as Smoothened (SMO) mutations. Several case reports document rare presentations, including melanoma of the breast, parotid gland, gastrointestinal tract, and central nervous system. Collectively these contributions reflect melanoma as a field spanning prevention, diagnosis, tumor biology, immunotherapy, and the study of unusual and metastatic disease.
