Overview

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations and the application of that knowledge to prevention and control. It examines who is affected by a condition, where and when it occurs, and which factors raise or lower risk, using surveillance and structured study designs to quantify incidence, prevalence, and outcomes. The discipline identifies causal and contributing factors, monitors trends, and evaluates interventions, providing the evidence base for public-health practice and policy. Research in this area examines the occurrence and management of infectious diseases such as influenza, malaria, typhoid, and syphilis, including temporal trends and outbreak management, alongside the epidemiology of non-communicable conditions through hospital-based and population studies. Studies also address screening program development, histopathological patterns of disease, and epidemiological methods applied in veterinary and zoonotic contexts. By linking exposures to outcomes across populations, epidemiology reveals the patterns and causes of disease that are not apparent at the level of the individual patient. The significance of epidemiology lies in its capacity to detect emerging health threats, identify modifiable risk factors, and assess the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic measures. Rigorous epidemiological reasoning underpins evidence-based medicine and public health, guiding decisions that reduce disease burden and protect the health of communities across diverse settings.
