Overview

Cosmetic dermatology is the branch of dermatology focused on improving or restoring the appearance of the skin, hair, and nails rather than treating disease alone. It encompasses procedures and treatments intended to address concerns such as the visible signs of aging, sun damage, acne scarring, pigmentation, wrinkles, and changes in skin texture or tone. Common interventions include chemical peels, laser and light-based skin resurfacing, injectable dermal fillers and neuromodulators, and topical regimens, often combined to achieve a more even and youthful appearance. While its aims are largely aesthetic, cosmetic dermatology requires the same medical understanding of skin biology, wound healing, and safety as the rest of the specialty, since procedures carry risks and must be tailored to individual skin types and conditions. The field also intersects with general health and well-being, as appearance-related concerns can affect a person's confidence and quality of life. As a topic within Dermatologic Research And Therapy, cosmetic dermatology connects clinical practice with ongoing study of skin treatments and their effects. This page provides an encyclopedic overview of the field within that scope, presenting a general account rather than citing studies that do not directly address cosmetic dermatologic practice.
