Overview

Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin that often appears as red, scaly patches. It typically follows a relapsing course, with flares and periods of improvement, and it frequently begins in childhood, although it can affect people of any age. The condition arises from a combination of factors, including a compromised skin barrier, immune system dysregulation, genetic predisposition, and environmental triggers such as irritants, allergens, and changes in climate. Intense itching is a hallmark, and scratching can further damage the skin barrier, increase the risk of infection, and perpetuate inflammation. Atopic dermatitis is often associated with other allergic conditions, such as asthma and allergic rhinitis, as part of the broader atopic tendency. Management focuses on restoring and protecting the skin barrier with regular moisturization, identifying and avoiding triggers, and using anti-inflammatory treatments to control flares, with more advanced therapies available for severe or persistent disease. Research continues into its underlying immune and barrier mechanisms and into new treatment approaches. As part of Dermatologic Research And Therapy, this open-access page brings together peer-reviewed studies relevant to inflammatory skin disease, skin sensitivity and contact reactions, and the management of dermatologic conditions.
